JEOM | Obtain materials and referrals before 15 APR 09 due date
To increase the opportunities for students, from underrepresented groups, who are pursuing studies in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines, the Department of Defense (DoD) High Performance Computing Modernization Program created the Joint Educational Opportunities for Minorities (JEOM) Program. JEOM focuses on students who have an interest in or would like to explore computational science and high performance computing challenges important to the DoD. A corollary goal is to ensure a competitive and diverse workforce within the DoD by offering training, mentorship, and career development for undergraduate students in the STEM disciplines. To help students and the DoD, JEOM also provides practical work experience and an introduction to the DoD's supercomputers and applications.
Summer Interns
The Joint Educational Opportunities for Minorities Program offers well qualified, highly motivated undergraduate students interested in spending the summer conducting research, an opportunity to work with seasoned and well-respected scientists and engineers located at Department of Defense laboratories and test centers across the country. The summer interns gain experience in key areas such as computational science, information technology, computer science, and scientific visualization. Summer intern beginning and ending dates vary based on internship location and usually last for ten weeks.
Summer Institutes
JEOM also offers 2-week summer institutes at participating universities. The institutes help students to better prepare for a successful internship and to meet students from all over the country with similar interests.

Qualifications
Summer interns must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program pursuing a degree in science, engineering, mathematics, or information technology at a degree granting institution. Interns should have completed their freshman year by the program start date. Normally selected applicants will have a 3.5 GPA or higher; however, in special cases, applicants with a GPA between 3.0 and 3.5 may be accepted. Positions are limited and selections are made based on the criteria established by each intern location.
